The Tourism Committee of Lorain Growth Corp. has a great opportunity for you to support restoring a piece of Lorain’s history. Caboose number 3855 is a real piece of Lorain’s rail history that is being restored to serve as an ambassador, representing the major role that the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad played in the history of Lorain. Number 3855, part of an order for 97 C26A cabooses built for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, is one of only a handful of that type that still survive today. The caboose sits on what was once Lorain’s thriving Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Lorain Yard, now known as Black River Landing. Through this rail yard passed millions of tons of material, coal outbound to destinations around the Great Lakes as well as iron ore and taconite inbound for steel mills in Youngstown and Pittsburgh. As an ambassador, number 3855 will serve to reflect upon, remind us of, and teach a new generation the rich railroad and industrial heritage of the City of Lorain.
